On the Shoulders of Giants was a phrase attributed to Isaac Newton when he said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Latinas First was founded to honor the women who had pushed a little harder, risen a little faster and achieved a lot more. Some stood on the shoulders of their grandmothers, mothers or others who allowed them to see a little further.

Pat Cortez, On the Shoulders of Giants Awardee 2014

Pat has allowed us to stand on her shoulders. She began her journey 40 years ago and rose to the executive offices at one of the largest banks in the country and proceeded to bring others along.
She fought to make sure banks were located in Latino neighborhoods, where no other banks would go. Now her counterparts understand the value of the business she developed for under-served communities.
Pat spearheaded the effort for the last three years to raise over 1.5 million dollars for other Latino organizations, granting over $500,000 to 300 students.
She never forgets to be thoughtful, kind and generous.
Pat has been our best cheerleader, a champion to many, a change agent for the city of Denver and our community. We are incredibly fortunate to have her in our world.
